NY Officials Urge MSM to get Meningitis Vaccines
New York officials are urging men who have sex with men to get vaccinated for meningitis.
Four new meningitis cases among gay and bisexual men have popped up in New York City since the start of 2013. That makes 22 cases since 2010, 7 of which were fatal.
So the Gay Men’s Health Crisis is partnering with the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to provide free vaccines to those who are at risk.
Dr. Demetre Daskalakis is an Assitant Professor of Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine and an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital. He tells OutQ News just how important this particular vaccine can be.
DR. DASKALAKIS: The other interesting thing that vaccination does is it may actually reduce the amount of carriage of this bacteria in people’s throats, so asymptomatic carriage, which is probably how it’s spread.
Officials recommend that ALL men–particularly those who are H-I-V positive–who regularly have intimate contact with other men they meet through a website, digital application, or at a bar or party in New York get the vaccine.
Daskalakis says men outside of the city shouldn’t worry.
