Gallup: 3.4% of US Adults Identify as LGBT

A new survey examining the distribution of the American LGBT population finds that 3.4% of U.S. adults self-identify as LGBT.

The report released Thursday was conducted by both Gallup and the Williams Institute, UCLA’s LGBT think tank. The study of more than 120,000 respondents is thought to be the largest single survey of its kind.

Study author Dr. Gary Gates tells OutQ News that he acknowledges that some participants may be closeted. But he stresses that the numbers give an accurate depiction of those who chose to identify on their own.

GATES: Even if you don’t fully agree with the framing of the question or some of these numbers that are produced, I just think it’s critical that…we’re never going to get whatever this mythical right number is…we’re never going to get it unless we keep asking these questions on surveys.

Gates says he and his team noticed that African-Americans, Latinos and Asians are more likely to identify as LGBT than whites. Gates describes it as “one of the most intriguing findings” of the survey.

Also Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 are almost THREE times as likely as seniors to be ‘out,’ with young women among the most visible. Gates attributes these high numbers to the diminishing stigma associated with homosexuality. He also says it’s difficult to know if the HIV/AIDS crisis has affected older populations.

And more LGBT respondents said they had either little to no college education than those that had a degree.

Gates says the “bigger picture” of Thursday’s report is that a large polling company like Gallup is now actively gathering data on the LGBT community.
