Millions to don purple on Spirit Day

Millions of LGBT advocates are expected to wear the color purple on Friday to commemorate Spirit Day, which is designed to honor anti-gay bullying victims nationwide.

Gay media watchdog GLAAD is coordinating the annual event first started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan. The group’s spokesman Rich Ferraro tells OutQ News they’re not at all surprised by the number of participants lined up this year.

FERRARO: “What we’re seeing more and more is that America, as a whole, supports our community, and wearing purple is just a very small way that you can do that. What we hope that happens this year is that people go beyond wearing purple and really start a national dialogue on bullying.”

Several celebrities and media personalities have already agreed to participate Friday, like trans activist Chaz Bono and openly gay actor Cheyenne Jackson. The hosts of ABC’s Good Morning America–including newly-out weatherman Sam Champion–and Bravo’s Andy Cohen are also set to wear purple.

Meanwhile, a bullied lesbian teen known for challenging the Motion Picture Association of America earlier this year is urging President Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney to wear purple. Her online petition has more than 45-hundred signatures. GLAAD’s Ferraro says both candidates have yet to respond.

GLAAD is also encouraging supporters to turn their social media profile pictures purple using a special Web application. Professional major league sports teams like the NBA and MLB have said they’ll do so.

Companies slated to honor ‘Spirit Day’ include Facebook, MTV, AT&T and PepsiCo.
