‘In the Life’ Ends 20-Year Run on Public Television

After a twenty-year run on public television, the LGBT magazine show ‘In the Life’ is leaving the air.

In an email to supporters signed by In the Life Media’s co-chairs, the non-profit production company announced Wednesday that the show’s December episode will be its last.

When In the Life debuted on six public television stations in June of 1992, it was as a variety show with a live studio audience. Gradually, it transitioned to a magazine format, produced by a professional staff, with an ever-expanding syndicated network of public stations. It earned two Emmy nominations and awards from GLAAD and the gay journalists’ group NLGJA. The board chairs say the pioneering show “helped change lives and, in some cases, even saved them.”

But Wednesday’s announcement notes that “much has changed” in twenty years. Where once, ‘In the Life’ was the only national LGBT-produced show on TV, “LGBT people now figure prominently in television news and media.” Meanwhile, the board chairs say, “creating high quality, in-depth journalism” continues to be expensive.

Amber Hall is a former In the Life producer now at SiriusXM who says it ‘broke her heart’ to hear the news. She says, “The organization has struggled with funding for a long time, and remaining relevant in the media today is very difficult without proper support and resources.”

‘In the Life’ says it’s working to put its entire archive online as an open-source repository documenting the LGBT movement.
