Four HIV Groups Get Obamacare Funding as Health Centers

The Obama administration has awarded more than $300,000 in federal funds to four HIV/AIDS service organizations looking to become “community health centers.”

The Department of Health and Human Services announced the recipients of its health center planning grant on Tuesday. The funds–which totaled $10 MILLION for 129 different groups–were made available by the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.

HHS says the awards will aid community-based organizations looking to provide comprehensive preventive and primary health care to a variety of patients.

NO/AIDS Task Force in New Orleans was among the four HIV/AIDS service groups that each received $80,000 to help expand into fully-functional health clinics. NO/AIDS C-E-O Noel Twilbeck says while the task is “daunting,” it’s in the best interest of the community.

TWILBECK: We know it’s going to be a lot of work to move in that direction, to figure out how do we craft a community health center, how do we capitalize on what we’ve learned in HIV and bring it to a broader community.

Twilbeck says his group’s first step is to craft a “needs assessment” survey among members of the community, which he adds is still suffering years after Hurricane Katrina. He says NO/AIDS is hoping to eventually reach 8000 people in the next two years.

Other groups that received the planning grant include AIDS Project of the East Bay in Oakland, California; AIDS Foundation of Chicago; and Action Aids, Inc. in Philadelphia.
