9/11 SPECIAL EXTRAS: Mark Bingham’s Story

leave a comment »

For every story we air, time constraints mean that parts of the story wind up on the proverbial ‘cutting room floor,’ and sometimes they’re wonderful moments. That’s especially true of special programming like our September 11th tribute that aired Sunday, OutQ News Reports: LGBT Stories of 9/11.

Luckily, the internet has no such time constraints. So over the next couple of days, we’re going to post some additional audio that we simply couldn’t fit into our one-hour special.

Alice Hoagland, surrounded by memorabilia left by her son, Mark Bingham, a hero of United Flight 93

Today, we start with a few clips about Mark Bingham, an openly-gay man and one of the heroes of United Flight 93, who brought an airliner down at the cost of their own lives rather than allowing it to be used as a weapon of mass destruction in Washington, DC.

In the bonus cuts, Mark’s mom, Alice Hoagland, describes some of the experiences that formed the man who would become an LGBT icon.

Please note that there are no internal edits in these clips, and (unlike the segment we aired Sunday) the audio mix here is very rough.

We’ll have more clips about Mark Bingham soon.
