GLSEN Goes After Anti-Gay FRC Over ‘Documentary’

An LGBT youth advocacy group is ordering an anti-gay association to stop selling and promoting a new homophobic film it made that the gay group says contains “false and defamatory” statements about it.

Attorneys with the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network–or GLSEN–sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Family Research Council on Monday. GLSEN director Eliza Byard tells OutQ News that FRC “crossed the line” with its new film titled “The Problem with Same-Sex Marriage.”

A portion of the movie can be found on YouTube under the title “What GLSEN wants to teach your children.” In it, FRC claims that GLSEN distributed “homoerotic material” to preteens at a conference in Boston, with FRC President Tony Perkins calling it “the most vile assault on teenagers ever concocted by homosexual activists.”

But Byard says GLSEN has had NO role in distributing the HIV education brochures. In fact, she says it became “very clear” to her organization after watching the online clip that it needed to respond to FRC’s “misstatements,” which she contends “are potentially damaging to GLSEN.”

BYARD: We have not yet received a response. We look forward to hearing back from them, and if we don’t get the answer that we need, we’ll consider our next steps.

Byard says GLSEN will rely on its legal counsel to determine when to take those next steps.

FRC did not respond to our request for comment.
