CA Activists Unsure How Ex-Gay Group Was Accredited

The American Civil Liberties Union is raising concerns about a well know ex-gay group and their permission to instruct school counselors in California.NARTH is included on a list of approved instructors for continuing education credits.

But, the California regulatory board responsible for tracking these situations says NARTH has been off that list since October of last year.

According to the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality — or NARTH — applied to be a provider of Continuing Education Credits to Licensed Couselors in the late 1980’s.

But the ACLU has sent a letter to the California Board asking that NARTH be removed from their list of Continuing Education instructors.

In the letter, the ACLU says NARTH supports therapies that have been discredited by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Counseling Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

According to the California Board, NARTH was removed from their list of instructors because they’ve been delinquent in their payments to the board since October.

Spokesman Russ Heimerich says the board is limited in their ability to remove a group from the list of approved Continuing Education Instructors if they meet basic criteria. But they can take action against licensed counselors who may harm patients based on flawed instruction.

HEIMERICH: We understand the concerns that somebody who goes to NARTH may actually try this reparative therapy and try to cure people of their gayness, and if that’s the case, then what we need to hear from are people who will file a complaint against that licensee, because that’s where the real damage is being done.

If NARTH does become current on their payments to the California Board, they could be put back on the list of Continuing Education instructors.
