Freedom to Marry Launches Valentine’s Education Campaign

Gay rights group Freedom to Marry is launching a national education campaign — including television advertising — to increase support for marriage equality among everyday Americans.

The organization says it will raise and spend $10 MILLION over the next three years for the initiative called “Why Marriage Matters.” It will include ads featuring real LGBT couples talking about–you guessed it–why marriage matters to them. The first TV spot is set to air on Valentine’s Day on CNN.

Freedom to Marry President Evan Wolfson said on a conference call Wednesday that he and his group are very excited about the campaign, which they’ve described as being the “largest-ever” of its kind.

WOLFSON: “It’s been a lot of time and energy and teamwork in the making and we believe that we have really cracked the code on what it’s going to take to move the next block, the next chunk, the next group of the American people to support for the freedom to marry.”

Freedom to Marry says it has analyzed more than six years of research on public opinion about marriage. The group found that people who talk to their gay friends about the importance of marriage are actually MORE likely to support the cause. That’s why the organization has decided to run the ads.

But the same-sex marriage advocates say that this is NOT a political lobbying campaign–they say it’s strictly educational.
