In a surprise announcement Friday morning, executive director of Equality California Geoff Kors announced he is leaving the statewide advocacy group.

When Geoff Kors become the executive director of the advocacy group Equality California in 2002 – there were very few protections for LGBT people. In fact, only five LGBT bills were passed in the 1990s.

Over the nine year Kors has led Equality California, the legislature has passed 71 pro-LGBT bills. And today, every single statewide office holder supports full equality – including incoming governor, Jerry Brown.

But Kors announced on Friday morning that he is leaving Equality California. In a statement, governor-elect Brown thanked Kors who has – in Brown’s words “done so much to advance equality and justice in our state.”

Kors told OutQ News that nine years is a long stay for any executive director.

Kors: “After having our most successful two year legislative session and our most successful election cycle, it seem like a good time for me to move on.”

Kors said he will stay until the end of next March to allow for a smooth transition of the stable organization. And he had this parting advice:

Kors: “It’s time that we demand what we want. We have to set the bar where we want to go or we’ll never get there.”
