GLSEN Wants ‘Safe Space’ Kit in Every School

A gay education group is launching a campaign to promote visible support for LGBT students at EVERY school nationwide.

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network–or GLSEN–has officially launched its ‘Safe Space’ campaign. As part of the project, the national organization hopes to send kits to more than 100,000  middle schools and high schools to help curb anti-gay bullying and to help train educators.

The kits contain ‘Safe Space’ stickers, posters, and a how-to guide for school personnel looking to become allies. Anyone can buy a ‘Safe Space’ kit and send it to a school of their choice by going to the campaign’s website.

GLSEN spokesman Daryl Presgraves says that although the group doesn’t have enough resources to send the kits out itself, the network is hoping that others will come together and help by saying they’ve had enough of anti-gay abuse and harassment.

Presgraves: “As horrible as the last couple of months have been with all of the tragedies that we’ve learned about, the one positive that we can say has maybe come out of it is that there is finally a recognition that we need to do more to address anti-LGBT bullying. And so we’re optimistic right now that this is a resouce that schools will receive that maybe in the past might not have been so willing to accept.”

Presgraves says at least a couple of thousand kits have already been sent out to schools in Los Angeles and New York. He says the group is now working on reaching schools throughout Maine.

Presgraves: “Students have told us when they walk down the halls and they see that sticker and they know they have that educator, that that makes all the difference in the world for them.”

Presgraves acknowledges that the group has a long way to go. But, he says it’s still working hard to spread the word about its new project.

So far, recently out country music singer Chely Wright, the cast of Modern Family, and openly gay Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns have each filmed PSAs for the campaign.
