National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce vs. McDonald’s

The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has written a letter to fast food giant McDonald’s – accusing it of “geographic pandering.” The letter was prompted by a pro-gay TV ad that McDonald’s is running in France, which has been making the rounds on the internet. But the ad isn’t the problem. NGLCC President Justin Nelson says the group’s problems with the restaurant chain date back to a 2008 dispute. A McDonald’s executive joined the NGLCC board of directors — an anti-gay group responded with a boycott — and the executive stepped down. The NGLCC accused the company of caving to pressure – and asked McDonald’s officials to provide assurances it was standing by the gay community. Nelson says to this day, they haven’t.

Nelson: “We need to see what sort of substantive engagement they’re looking to do to ensure that LGBT people, whether they be customers, whether they be employees, whether they be suppliers, know that this is a company that wants them in any or all of those three capacities, and at this point I have serious doubts about that.”

Nelson said the French ad campaign struck him as disingenuous, coming from a company that he says abandoned its public support of the LGBT community.

Nelson: “It’s not good enough to run enough, when you have turned your back on the LGBT segment in the US. It’s ludicrous to think that one feel-good ad changes an entire process of wrong steps”

The NGLCC says it will not accept future support or membership by McDonald’s or any of its subsidiaries, until the company “remed(ies) this situation.” McDonald’s did not return OutQ’s call for comment.
