Most LGBT Americans Unaware of Greater Cancer Risk

New research from the American Cancer Society has found that the vast majority of LGBT Americans don’t know they have a higher risk for certain types of cancer.

The ACS reports that LGBT Americans are more likely to develop anal, breast, and lung cancer … but only one out of ten survey respondents were aware of that risk.

American Cancer Society spokesman Myrna Duarte told Out Q News that many LGBT individuals aren’t aware of their increased risk of cancer because the community was often “treated as if it only had one problem”.

Duarte: “For many years, the LGBT community was very focused, and rightfully so, on HIV and AIDS.” The reality is that today, thanks to the great progress and advances in HIV and AIDS, there are actually more people dying from cancer than from AIDS. And that’s just basically a lack of information”

Duarte says the ACS is working on outreach programs to better serve the LGBT community, including a “Cancer Chats” pilot program at the New York LGBT Community Center that provides diet and other low cost options that can stop cancer before it starts. The ACS will also hold its first LGBT-specific “Walk For The Cure” event in New York City this September.

Duarte added that the best advice is to remain aware by visiting a doctor to “get all the correct screenings that are necessary”.
