The California grassroots coalition working to repeal Prop 8 in 2010 has failed to gather enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

Restore Equality 2010 – the coalition working to repeal Prop 8 this year — conceded Monday that they failed to gather the nearly 700,000 valid signatures needed to qualify for the November ballot.

Executive Director of Love Honor Cherish John Henning said: “This is a heartbreaking moment.”

Love Honor Cherish is one of 40 grassroots activist groups who were part of the Restore Equality 2010 coalition.

Henning told Out Q News that the group will continue to meet and will now shift their attention to unifying the LGBT community behind a 2012 campaign.

Henning said: “Our experience over the last year should prove invaluable to that effort.”

Love Honor Cherish board member Lester Aponte said the statewide coalition had “hundreds of thousands of conversations with California voters about the right to marry.” Aponte said that the process – “brought hope to thousands whose hearts were broken by the passage of Prop 8.”
