GA Community Rallies Against Gay Prom Teen

with one comment

The rollercoaster continues for gay Georgia High Schooler Derrick Martin – whose decision to take his boyfriend to the prom has led to accolades from the gay community – but animosity from his own community.

Derrick Martin’s story started out smoothly. He wanted to take his same-sex date to the prom; his school said okay, albeit reluctantly. That’s about the last time things went without a hitch for the eighteen year-old.

Last week, Martin told reporters that the publicity around his request to take his boyfriend to prom has led many in his hometown of Cochran, his school, Bleckley County High, and even in his own family to reject him. Martin said his parents kicked him out – according to him, because of all the attention. Martin’s father Raymond, who is a teacher at the high school, did not return calls for comment.

And while Martin and his boyfriend are still allowed to attend the prom together – they might be the only ones there. WGXA reports students are organizing an alternate, private prom, so that they won’t have to attend the event with a gay couple. A female student told the station “you’ve waited 11 years to go to and it’s a sacred event and somebody walks in and says ‘Oh, I’m gay, I’m going to do a walk through with another guy.’” Community members told local media they don’t want Cochran to be “known as a pro gay town.”

Not all the attention was negative – on Friday night, the Atlanta Gay Mens Chorus made Martin an honorary member, and the crowd at a concert gave him a standing ovation. Martin told the audience “everything that I’ve done up to this point has been to show others, like myself in my situation, that you can get your rights.”
