GLN calls for March on White House Oct 10

Gay activists are asking those attending this October’s ‘National Equality March’ to the U-S Capitol to show up a day early – so they can march on the White House.

Andy Thayer from Chicago’s Gay Liberation Network says organizers of the National Equality March haven’t focused enough on the President.

Thayer: “This president could be, at the very least, using his bully pulpit – and could be doing things like immediate stop-loss on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and other measures for our community. Instead, he’s only done stuff when we’ve actually called him out on his failings.”

Thayer said he was concerned that the March on Washington, because of its focus on pressuring lawmakers, was going to turn into a Democratic Party rally.

But march co-organizer Robin McGehee said that couldn’t be further from the truth – and said that the time is now to put pressure on all federal officials – before the window closes.

McGehee: “We are living in a time right now when we dominate the Senate, we dominate the House, and we have a president who’s made promises to our community. We have, in my opinion, one more year before that president is going to be saying he’s running for office again, and at that point he’s not going to touch us with a ten foot pole.”

McGehee said she would not discourage attendees of the October 11th march from attending Thayer’s October 10th march on the White House.

One person who may not be at the White House that day is President Obama. The annual “President’s Cup” golf tournament is that weekend, in San Francisco.
