HRC Releases Study on LGBT People of Color

The Human Rights Campaign has released a report on the complexities and concerns faced by LGBT people of color. The report,- titled “At the Intersection: Race, Sexuality and Gender” – encompasses two years of surveys of LGBT ethnic minority communities.

HRC Chief Diversity Officer Cuc Vu  says she hopes that gay groups will look at the report as a way of opening up a dialogue about diversity and inclusion.

Vu: “Traditionally people are pretty homogenous in terms of who they choose to hang out with, and even in a lot of the organizations in which we work, LGBT organizations, also there’s often not a whole lot of diversity there either.”

Vu says she was surprised by the prominent role religion plays in the lives of many LGBT people of color – but said fighting discrimination is the same battle in any church.

Vu: “Whether it comes from Pat Robertson or another tradition or faith, I think is irrelevant. The impact at the end of the day is that people are using religion as a screen to be able to justify discrimination, and that just should be categorically wrong.”

The study also revealed that many LGBT people of color view the world FIRST from the viewpoint of race and gender, and feel there is as much racism and sexism among LGBT people as there is among non-LGBT people. They also see themselves as under-represented in gay media, and among gay rights leaders.

The report is available on HRC’s website.
