NY D.A. will try lesbian teen allegedly roughed up by cops

Brooklyn’s District Attorney’s office is pressing charges against a teenage lesbian – who says SHE was beaten up by NYPD officers shouting anti-gay slurs.

On May 17th, police broke up a party at the IFE Lounge in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Police say they were responding to reports of a fight outside the lounge and were trying to disperse the crowd. But 19 year-old open lesbian Tiffany Jimenez says she was trying to get away when she was shoved to the ground by five male officers. Party promoter Jeannette Grey says the cops were using anti-gay language.

Officers arrested Jimenez, took her into custody, and charged her with disorderly conduct. Jimenez is supported by gay rights group the Audre Lorde Project. The Project says they got a call from Assistant District Attorney John Rudikoff last week, saying that the charges against Jimenez would be dropped, and that he believed the charges to be “baseless.”

At a hearing on Monday, the Kings County DA did NOT drop the charges. Audre Lorde Project Program Coordinator Ejeris Dixon said at a news conference they are “appalled” that the DA’s office had broken their promise.

But a spokesman for the DA’s office told OutQ News that Rudikoff did not make any promise to drop the charges – and in fact never made a call the Audre Lorde Project.

A spokesman for the Project did not return a call for comment.

A bench trial has been set for August 17th.
