This Saturday marks the start of the 2009 World OutGames, a festival of sports, arts, parties and gay pride taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Games will feature LBGT participants from 98 different countries competing in 34 different sports, as well as a variety of cultural and art exhibitions. The event will also feature a three-day international human rights conference, in cooperation with Amnesty International and computer giant IBM. OutGames CEO and Director Uffe Elbaek says that although there will be a serious tone to the conference, there will still be more than enough fun over the nine-day long festival.

Elbaek: “It’s going to really be a wonderful event, both very serious and at the same time totally serious fun.”

Elbaek said that there are hundreds of volunteers helping ensure the event goes smoothly, and that the games are already attracting media attention both in Denmark and abroad. But Elbaek acknowledged that sponsorship had dipped for the event since it first debuted in Montreal in 2006. Elbaek said that while money is a concern, OutGames had managed to secure some large sponsorship before the global economic downturn hit Europe in the last year.
