‘Hair’ Cast to Perform At Cleve Jones’ DC March

The producers and cast of the Broadway Musical “Hair” have announced they are canceling the October Eleventh show – so that they can take part in a March on Washington organized by activist Cleve Jones. The cast made the announcement Monday night at a rally in Los Angeles, joined by Jones, ‘Milk’ screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, and several other prominent gay rights activists.

Oskar Eustis is Artistic Director of “The Public Theater” and producer of HAIR. He said as soon as the cast and crew heard about plans for the march, they wanted to participate.

Eustis: “The only way to do this is to cancel a show, and that’s kind of a big deal. It’s a lot of money, for one thing. But the more we thought about it, the more everybody felt like it was just the right thing to do, and we finally just decided that it was so right for the spirit of the show that we should just go ahead and do it. So we did it.”

Eustis says the entire cast and crew of Hair will be at the march … because the show MUST go on.

Eustis: “We are absolutely going to perform. (laughs) Plans are still in the process of being made. But there’s no question that what Cleve wanted us to do was to come and sing, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

Eustis says reaction from fans and investors alike has been overwhelmingly positive, and that the experience will have a positive effect on everyone involved in the show.
