Cops break up San Diego gay Dem’s fundraiser
Police near San Diego California broke up a political fundraiser at the home of a middle-aged lesbian couple – with tear gas, police dogs, and a helicopter.
Sheriff’s Deputy Marshall Abbott went to the home in Encinitas, he says to investigate a noise complaint. Attendees say they suspect a complaint may have been filed by a neighbor, who hurled anti-gay slurs during a speech given by Congressional hopeful Francine Busby.
Busby told OutQ’s Michelangelo Signorile Wednesday that Abbott dropped hostess – 60 year-old Shari Barman – to the floor.
Busby: “I saw her go down, and people rushed over there saying ‘stop, what are you doing’ – and people were standing around chatting, so this was just totally stunning. It was Shocking. And then what I recall shortly thereafter, he pulled out pepper spray and began spraying people.”
Other witnesses say Deputy Abbott just lost control of himself. Attendee Kimberly Beatty told the San Diego Union Tribume “He had a raged look in his eyes, and his head was bobbing from side to side.” The paper reports that Abbott called for backup – which arrived in the form of eight police cars, a canine unit, a fire truck and a helicopter.
A Police spokesman told the paper that internal affairs has launched an investigation.
