Openly Gay Sen Duane Staying With NY Dems

After mulling it over, openly gay New York State Senator Tom Duane has decided not to leave the Democratic party to join the ‘coalition government’ set up by Republicans and two dissident Democrats.

On Monday, two rogue Democrats joined with all thirty Senate Republicans to seemingly boot the Democratic leadership out of power. Several more Democrats were said to be thinking about joining the new, so-called “bipartisan” coalition – if Monday’s vote holds up to a challenge by Democratic Senate leader Malcolm Smith.

One of those on the edge was Manhattan Senator Tom Duane. Duane is the Senate Sponsor of the Gay Marriage bill, which was passed by the Assembly last month, and has been held up by Senate uncertainty. The word was that he was “hashing out a deal” with the new leadership to bring the marriage bill – as well as an anti-bullying bill – to the floor for a vote.

Now, the New York Times reports, after being holed up in his hotel room for days – Senator Duane has resolved to stay with the mainline Democrats. Counsel Mark Furnish told the Times “He needed some time to reassess.”

A Spokesman for Duane’s office told OutQ News “Regardless of the leadership outcome, Senator Duane is deeply committed and passionate about passing same-sex marriage and other legislation for which he has fought his entire career.” Eric Sumberg said “As always, he will work with members from both sides of the aisle to achieve these goals.”
