Iraq militia anti-gay death squads intensify

leave a comment »

Pro-gay US Lawmakers are ramping up the pressure on state department officials to take action to protect gay Iraqis … as militias there seem to be ramping up the violence against gays.

Iraqi police have confirmed the deaths of six more gay Iraqis in the last ten days, including two just yesterday. ABC News reports that an unknown Shiite militia group has called for a ‘crackdown’ on gays. But a source close to the Iraqi military said the killings were NOT at the hands of a militia, but rather tribal violence. An Iraqi soldier who did not want to give his name told ABC News “They were sexual deviants. Their tribes killed them to restore their family honor.”

The recent killings bring the three month total up to as many as thirty Iraqis who were executed for being gay.

The news came just days after thirty-eight US Representatives sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asking her to take action. The Representatives – led by gay lawmakers Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin, and Jared Polis – wrote “Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, [LGBT] citizens of Iraq have become more susceptible to discrimination and violence.” The letter asks Clinton to “prioritize the investigation of these allegations.”

A Spokesman for Polis told OutQ News the Congressman has not yet heard back from Secretary of State Clinton or the State Department. The State Department did not immediately return a request for comment.
