VA Gov Candidate Vows to Repeal Nups Ban

As Virginia’s June 9th Gubernatorial primary gets closer, one candidate is trying to win the votes of gay rights supporters. Former state delegate Brian Moran already has the endorsement of the Virginia Partisans gay and Lesbian Democratic Club. Moran now says if he’s elected, he will work tirelessly to repeal the state’s 2006 constitutional amendment banning gay marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships.

Moran: “I’m the only one running for Governor who will not rest until we repeal it. Virginians are a very fair, fair people. And when they understand that this amendment and ban went well beyond marriage, I think I will be successful in repealing it.”

Moran would not say whether he supports full marriage rights or civil unions for gay couples, but he said neither can even be DISCUSSED until the ban is repealed.

Moran: “I’d like to take a step, I think, towards equality, in repealing the Marshall-Newman amendment so that we can at least have a conversation with respect to civil unions.”

Moran’s poll numbers have dropped in the hotly-contested three-way race. A ‘Survey USA’ poll released this week shows Moran double digits behind Democratic strategist and frontrunner Terry McAuliffe – and five points behind state Senator Creigh Deeds.
