UT Anti-Gay Senator Put Back On Judiciary Committee

with one comment

A Utah state senator who was removed from a legislative commitee earlier this year for making anti-gay remarks – has quietly been renamed to that committee.

In February, Sen. Chris Buttars compared gays and lesbians to terrorists during an interview with a doccumentary filmmaker. His remarks prompted statewide outrage and lead to his removal from the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee, which he chaired.

But last week, Utah radio station KCPW reported that Senate President Michael Waddoups had re-instated Buttars for the interim session. Waddoups said that Buttars’ “sharp mind” and political experience would be an asset for the committee, which is meeting to study issues, not pass bills.

Troy Williams, organizer of the pro-gay “Buttars-palooza” event in March, criticized the reinstatement.

Williams: “This is what we’ve come to expect from the Utah legislature. It’s a good ol’ boys club. And the Senate Majority Leader Michael Waddoups, though he has publicly slapped Chris Buttars on the hand, he stands four-square behind him.”

The interim committee may not vote on bills, but does help determine what the legislature will take up NEXT session. In a previous session, the committee studied a bill that would have allowed same-sex partners the right to sue in cases of wrongful death.
