Equality California Reacts to Prop 8 Report, Looks to Future
A new report released Tuesday spells out exactly what would be required if California’s LGBT community wants to regain marriage equality through the ballot box. The report by the political consulting firm Woodward & McDowell was commissioned by Equality California. They were tasked with doing an inventory of the group’s role in the No on Prop 8 campaign as well as providing insights and recommendations for the next campaign.
The report – released Tuesday – underscores the enormous challenge ahead in facing a well-funded, well-organized, strongly motivated and unified antigay marriage opponent.
It says: “Defining the message and the public debate itself will be critical, and will require much groundwork be laid in advance.”
The report specifically cites the Mormon and Catholic churches as powerful religious groups with very large megaphones “emboldened” by the passage of Prop. 8 and calls them “a formidable force which must not be underestimated.”
Equality California executive director Geoff Kors told OutQ News that the report is a reminder that – in his words – “we will need every organization and every person who supports equality to step up at the greatest level possible for us to win.”
