CT gay marriage group to shutter

After eight years, Connecticut’s top statewide gay marriage group is declaring victory — and calling it quits.

Love Makes a Family announced Wednesday that it would cease to be, starting next year. The group formed in 1999, in response to the fight for second-parent adoption. Two years later, the group won that landmark fight in the legislature, and turned its sights to marriage. That fight took a bit longer – and included a pit stop at “Civil Unions” – but ultimately also resulted in a victory.

Love Makes a Family Executive Director Anne Stanback says the group is confident in the permanence of gay marriage laws.

Stanback: “We would not be closing if we had any concern that marriage wasn’t safe and secure here in Connecticut for all time. And I think people should feel very comfortable about that.”

Stanback said her group will be offering its help to similar organizations in other states, but noted that much of the group’s success was due to its location.

Stanback: “We have worked over the last eight years with so many wonderful state-based organizations, that are doing the same kind of work that we’re doing in Connecticut. The only difference is they don’t live in a state that’s quite as progressive.”

Stanback says the group will keep its associated Political Action Committee up and running, even as Love Makes a Family closes its doors. Stanback herself is stepping down in July, and says she’s looking forward to spending more time with her wife – whom she married last month after 25 years together.
