CA couples’ high and low reaction to stay decision

with one comment

Crowds of same-sex couples hoping to get married at city halls across California experienced elation followed by disappointment Thursday afternoon.

First they heard a federal judge had lifted a stay on his ruling that overturned the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage. Then minutes later they learned U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker had delayed the effective date of that decision until next Wednesday.

OutQ Correspondent Karen Ocamb was at West Hollywood City Hall. Moments after the decision came down, she described the excitement as word came on the Freedom To Marry twitter feed that the stay had been lifted.

Ocamb: “Everybody was cheering, ‘Yay! Yay! We’re gonna start performing marriages as soon as the couples get their licenses, and start showing up here’. And then, ‘Wait a second, wait a second, we need confirmation of that.’ And then slowly, when that started coming in — that people actually started reading the ruling and that there was a stay until August 18th — all of a sudden, you could just feel the deflation. I mean, we’re outside, but you could feel everybody getting despondent. This emotional roller-coaster was happening again.”

The delay in lifting the stay gives same-sex marriage opponents the chance to apply for an emergency stay from the Ninth Circuit U-S Court of Appeals, which they have vowed to do.
